Losing a few drops of urine while exercising, laughing or sneezing. It is more common than you think, yet we do not talk about it easily. Pelvic floor problems can quietly affect your daily life and self-confidence. Fortunately, there are several ways to strengthen the pelvic floor. Emsella is a non-invasive treatment that stimulates the pelvic floor muscles while you simply sit fully clothed on a special chair.
Why is a strong pelvic floor important?
The pelvic floor consists of a group of muscles that support the bladder, uterus and bowel, among other organs. These muscles play an important role in holding urine and stool.
When the pelvic floor muscles weaken or function less well, you may experience unwanted urine leakage. For example when you cough, sneeze, laugh or exercise. This is also known as stress incontinence.
Pregnancy, childbirth, hormonal changes and ageing can affect the pelvic floor. But other factors can also play a role.
Although urine leakage is common, that does not mean you have to keep living with it.
What is Emsella?
Emsella is a treatment that uses electromagnetic energy to stimulate the pelvic floor muscles.
The technology is called HIFEM, which stands for High-Intensity Focused Electromagnetic. It generates powerful, repeated muscle contractions that you cannot perform consciously in the same way.
The aim is to train the pelvic floor muscles and improve muscle function. This can contribute to better bladder control and a reduction of certain types of urine leakage.
An important advantage is that the treatment is entirely external. No injections or surgical procedures are needed.
Who is Emsella suitable for?
Emsella may be of interest to people who suffer from a weakened pelvic floor or certain types of urinary incontinence.
Think, for example, of:
- urine leakage when laughing, sneezing, coughing or exercising
- reduced bladder control
- pelvic floor weakness after pregnancy or childbirth
- changes in the pelvic floor around or after the menopause
However, not every form of incontinence is caused by muscle weakness. An overactive bladder, prolapse or other medical causes can also cause symptoms.
That is why it is important to assess beforehand where the symptoms come from and whether Emsella is a suitable treatment.
What does an Emsella treatment involve?
One of the nicest things about Emsella is its convenience.
During the treatment you sit fully clothed on the Emsella chair. The electromagnetic energy stimulates the pelvic floor muscles, so you feel repeated muscle contractions.
This can feel somewhat unusual or intense, but the treatment is generally well tolerated.
A session takes about 28 minutes. Afterwards you can usually resume your daily activities straight away.
As a rule, no recovery time is needed.
How many treatments are needed?
Because strengthening muscles takes time and repetition, Emsella is usually offered as a course.
A commonly used treatment protocol consists of six sessions spread over about three weeks. Depending on the symptoms and the result, a different programme or additional guidance may be advised.
Some people already notice a difference during the course of treatment, while others experience improvement only later.
The effect varies from person to person. Emsella does not guarantee that urine leakage will disappear completely and does not in all cases replace pelvic floor physiotherapy or other medical treatments.
Treatment or a consultation?
Pelvic floor problems are nothing to be ashamed of. And although they are common, there are often ways to reduce the symptoms.
With Emsella we offer an accessible way to stimulate the pelvic floor muscles, without surgery or intensive recovery time.
